Atreus Study 2024: “Is Germany’s Energy Transition Moving Fast Enough?”

Atreus Study 2024 from the Solution Groups “Energy and Environment” and “Major Infrastructure Projects”

Our latest study on the energy transition in Germany reveals the considerable criticism that business leaders have of an energy strategy that is perceived as incoherent by legislators. In particular, the speed of implementation and the existing framework conditions are met with disapproval by a significant proportion of the German economy.

Framework conditions and speed of implementation: great need for improvement

Our latest study “Is Germany’s energy transition moving fast enough?”, in which around 600 top executives – including managing directors, board members, supervisory board members and interim managers from various sectors – were surveyed in May 2024, provides important insights into the significant challenges that are anticipated and reflected in the energy transition. The great need for improvement in the speed of implementation and the framework conditions for the transformation of the energy industry is particularly clear: around 90 percent of respondents rate these areas as needing improvement or significant improvement – an alarming figure. This applies to the political as well as the economic and socio-political level.

„It is clear that Germany lacks a clear and coherent energy concept that is comprehensible to all stakeholders. Some of the current measures are contradictory and there are no clear priorities. It is crucial that politicians take targeted action now in order to put the energy transition on the right track and not jeopardize the competitiveness of companies. We urgently need to focus on clear, long-term strategies that extend across legislative periods and take into account both ecological sustainability and economic reality.“

Necessary political measures and the key role of hydrogen

The promotion of disruptive technologies (56%) and the expansion of renewable energies (53%) are also identified by more than half as immediate tasks for policymakers. Almost two thirds of the study participants see hydrogen as a key component of the energy transition. 55% emphasize the importance of a hydrogen core network and call for investments in the production capacity for green hydrogen and in the supply chain for hydrogen imports.

„The speed of the energy transition is a double-edged sword. On the one hand, we need to pick up the pace, particularly in terms of approval procedures and grid expansion. On the other hand, the pace must not be at the expense of competitiveness and feasibility. A balanced approach is urgently needed here. In concrete terms, this means that we first need to build or expand the necessary grids, supported by faster approval procedures and less bureaucracy, in order to accelerate the expansion of the share of renewable energies and new technologies such as hydrogen infrastructure as part of the energy transition.“
